Ex-NFL Player Yannik Cudjoe-Virgil Transitions Into Commercial Real Estate

By: PRLog
BALTIMORE - July 16, 2018 - PRLog -- Upon entering the NFL, Yannik Cudjoe-Virgil -- a former walk-on at the University of Maryland, College Park quickly became a starter and star on the field. However, stricken with injury plagued seasons including a torn pectoral muscle that ended his debut junior season, Cudjoe-Virgil still remained an attractive NFL prospect to scouts which landed him an NFL Combine invite and a spot on the Tennessee Titans roster after the 2015 NFL Draft.

"It was always my dream as a kid to get to the NFL. I worked extremely hard for over 10 years to play at a high level," said Cudjoe-Virgil.

In his rookie season Cudjoe-Virgil looked to have a promising NFL career catching the eye's of coaches and was said to be a "surprise" of the camp by a NBC Sports national writer. After struggling with injuries throughout his rookie season, Cudjoe-Virgil suffered a torn patella tendon in week 14 and was placed on injury reserve. After multiple procedures and two years of intense rehab and training, Cudjoe-Virgil retired in 2017.

"I was heartbroken," said Cudjoe-Virgil. "Injuries are always tough to deal with and this one was nothing like the others. I knew that God had a plan for me."

Cudjoe-Virgil soon transitioned into a career in commercial real estate with a brokerage, and formed his Baltimore, Md.-based real estate company Merlynn Acquisitions, LLC to begin cutting his teeth into residential real estate redevelopment.

"I was always interested in commercial real estate and finance," said Cudjoe-Virgil. "I took some courses in finance when I was still active in the NFL. Real estate gives me the same rush of adrenaline that I felt on game day. There is no better feeling than closing a deal."

Cudjoe-Virgil aims to acquire and redevelop large multifamily assets with investors and development partners in Baltimore and across the U.S.

"Through my research I have discovered a huge demand for affordable housing in the multifamily sector," said Cudjoe-Virgil. There is a high demand for apartments in Baltimore and across the U.S for young professionals and baby boomers who have been downsizing since after the 2008 recession."

Despite the long grown stigma of Baltimore City, it has seen an increase in demand for multifamily housing. With a wave of new supplies set come online including the highly acclaimed 414 Light street under construction, developers are becoming highly active in Baltimore due to its recent surge of population and job growth.

"I am really excited for Baltimore in the next upcoming years," said Cudjoe-Virgil. "We are beginning to see quite a bit of capital infusion in certain parts of Baltimore, particularly downtown. We want to focus on redeveloping apartments in surrounding submarkets and create affordable housing to match the growth and demand, giving the residents in Baltimore a clean and safe place to live."
