International Medical Aid Now Accepting Applications For Summer 2022 Healthcare Internship Programs In East Africa

By: Get News
In its internship programs in East Africa, IMA collaborates with an extensive network of public and private hospitals to provide rewarding, hands-on programs for its interns. Future health care practitioners get to dedicate their time and resources to make a difference in underserved communities.

International Medical Aid continues to make headway worldwide after announcing the Summer 2022 healthcare internship programs in East Africa. It stays on track with its mission to improve access to healthcare for marginalized communities.

Through the years, IMA has offered once-in-a-lifetime medical internships abroad for doctors, medical residents, medical students, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and pre-med undergraduates to work in busy international hospitals, mentored by its outstanding staff of dedicated physicians and other healthcare professionals.

The organization has exceptional teaching hospitals in East Africa with a staff distribution of consultants, medical officers, dental officers, clinical officers, pharmacists, nurses, and counselors. It leads the way in providing interns the opportunity to shadow a variety of healthcare practitioners and gain unique clinical experiences.

Asante Sana, one of the interns who went to East Africa, said her experience in the region was the most humbling thing she has gone through.

“The trip was about giving back to those affected by poverty on a daily basis. I interned at Coast General Teaching & Referral Hospital, a public hospital with consultation rates averaging $1.50 to $3 USD. The lack of education and access to basic health/dental care resulted in the majority of cases we saw. The patients coming in were already so advanced in their stages of illness that oftentimes, no treatment plan would fully revive the affected body region,” Asante wrote.

Much of Kenya is rural land, contributing to high rates of its populace living in poverty. In fact, one-third of the entire nation lives on less than the U.S. $1.90 per day.

“The reality is that many other third-world countries can benefit from mission trips where future health care practitioners dedicate their time and resources to make a difference in such communities,” said Asante.

On the other hand, Mohammed Alajaber said he decided to challenge himself and push his clinical knowledge to its boundaries by working in East Africa.

“I wanted to go somewhere that possessed little technological resources. Although some people may aim for a more well-developed location, I believe that learning starts from the patient’s bedside, by seeing, feeling, and listening,” he said.

At the height of the pandemic, the International Medical Aid has made significant contributions to addressing the lack of health equipment in the region. The team has delivered personal protective equipment (PPE) to its partner hospitals in the region as part of the organization’s structured humanitarian initiatives in the area.

IMA’s clinical programs also leverage the organization’s significant experience working in the developing world. In the midst of past outbreaks of infectious diseases, the organization’s programs have led the charge in offering participants opportunities to gain unique clinical experiences while meaningfully contributing to underserved communities around the world.
