Bob Scott at the Sale of the Worlds Most Expensive Stamp

All You Ever Wanted to know about the World’s Most Expensive Stamp but Were Afraid To Ask.

Yorktown, New York Feb 22, 2022 (Issuewire.com) - Have you ever wondered about the little piece of paper that is considered the World's most expensive stamp?  Where did it come from and why would anyone pay $8.3 million dollars for a piece of paper?   On March 10th, the British Empire study Group will host an interactive webinar with Robert Scott, an expert on the stamp and its history.   Mr. Scott will tell the story of the 12-year-old boy who discovered the stamp; how it became part of a high-profile divorce and captured the fancy of "the fox catcher' John DuPont.

The story of "The" British Guiana is one of several monthly programs offered free of charge by the British Empire Study Group that brings history and contemporary issues to life using philately (stamps and covers).  The name of the group gives the impression that the topics are more limiting than they actually are.  The talks go beyond even the vast boundaries of the British Empire, for example, the April talk which will take place live from Fraunces Tavern in New York City with Henry Scheuer discussing early United States inaugurations.  The BESG programs have a global following, and the speakers are highly accessible to participants in a setting where everyone is invited to share their personal connections and perspectives about the topic.  A recent Dominica talk drew a participant involved in the Red Cross's natural disaster recovery who explained how the Island's disaster response practices impacted mail survival rates; a program about St. Helena had relatives of some of the men imprisoned on the island.

The BESG was founded in 2007 by NYU professor and stamp expert, Richard Maisel, and it is currently led by Joan Harmer of the historic Harmer family, whose involvement in philately spans over four generations. The BESG is one of many independent affiliates of the American Philatelic Society.  Those interested in attending "The" British Guiana program or any of the BESG programs can register through their website at BEStudygroup.org.
