Human Nature And The Struggle For Democracy

Bruce Brodie argues in “WHERE ARE WE GOING?” that we must change our cultural environment if we are to suppress our tribal instincts, bring out the better angels of our nature, and enable us to cooperate, save our democracy, and address our existential problems. We must greatly reduce our economic and racial inequities and create new attitudes and perspectives – understanding how dependent we are upon one another. Through hard work and perseverance, we must restore the American Dream that allows us to rise from the depths of poverty to social and economic success.

WHERE ARE WE GOING?” begins with Part I, which outlines the origins and evolution of our hybrid human nature. Part II discusses our society’s dual racial and socioeconomic inequities that bring out the worst in our human nature. Part III describes the ongoing conflict between democracy and autocracy in America and abroad. And Part IV discusses how human nature and our cultural environment shape our behavior and impact the struggle between democracy and autocracy.

About the Author

Ten years ago, Bruce Brodie retired from a busy cardiology practice at Cone Health in Greensboro, NC. He was a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of North Carolina Teaching Service in Greensboro and had a busy practice in interventional cardiology. He was a co-founder and past chairman of the LeBauer-Brodie Center for Cardiovascular Research and Education.

When Brodie retired from medicine, he set out on his own journey in an attempt to understand how we got here, how our evolutionary past has shaped the way we are, and where we might be headed.

WHERE ARE WE GOING?” is a great read that helps us understand how our hybrid human nature and our cultural environment impact our national struggle to save our democracy from the forces of autocracy.
