Connecticut’s HIE, Connie, Implements Clinical Architecture’s PIQXL Gateway to Improve Patient Data Quality Statewide

Developed by Clinical Architecture, PIQXL Gateway is the first commercial solution built on the PIQI framework for patient message quality

Connie, Connecticut’s state-designated Health Information Exchange (HIE), is implementing Clinical Architecture’s PIQXL Gateway to help healthcare organizations across Connecticut assess and strengthen the quality of shared patient data. The solution enables Connie to evaluate incoming messages, identify where data quality breaks down, and provide participants with actionable insights.

PIQXL Gateway is the first commercial solution built on the open-source Patient Information Quality Improvement (PIQI) framework, a standards-based model for evaluating patient messages across domains like accuracy, availability, and consistency. Originally developed by Clinical Architecture, PIQI is now governed by the PIQI Alliance, and is nearing completion of the HL7 balloting process. Connie will use PIQXL Gateway to apply the framework in practice to score data and identify where quality issues originate in clinical and analytical workflows.

“The PIQXL Gateway is designed to provide visibility into the usability of data exchanged across the healthcare ecosystem. Partnering with the team at Connie to evaluate and strengthen data usability across the state of Connecticut is a powerful opportunity to demonstrate what’s possible when data quality is treated as a priority. We are honored to have been selected to support this work and are excited about what we can accomplish together,” said Charlie Harp, CEO of Clinical Architecture.

The system enables upstream remediation by identifying specific defects at the field and message level, helping reduce the burden of manual data review. PIQXL Gateway also provides visibility into how data quality varies across sources and over time, enabling organizations to benchmark performance and prioritize improvements.

“High-quality data is the foundation of effective health information exchange and care coordination, and improving data quality is a shared responsibility across the healthcare ecosystem,” said Jenn Searls, Executive Director of Connie. “PIQXL Gateway is the latest addition to our strategy to strengthen data integrity, giving us greater visibility into where quality issues originate across our network so we can work collaboratively to address them. Through this initiative, Connie is reinforcing the accuracy, consistency, and trustworthiness of the data flowing across our exchange—empowering participants to make more informed decisions.”

This collaboration reinforces Connie’s commitment to advancing data quality across the healthcare ecosystem and gives participants greater confidence in the information they rely on for care delivery and coordination.
