Latest technology expands occupancy intelligence to smaller - highly-valued - work areas
Occuspace, the leading occupancy intelligence platform for the built environment, today announced Micro - a new sensor for measuring space utilization in meeting rooms, flex spaces, phone booths, and other shared work areas. The Occuspace Micro sensor extends the company’s occupancy intelligence to cover 100% of building space, seamlessly complementing the Macro sensor designed for larger, open work spaces.
“As real estate stakeholders prioritize space optimization, the need for granular data on even the smallest spaces is a high priority,” said Nic Halverson, CEO of Occuspace. “Micro offers the fastest, simplest, and most cost-effective way to measure small-space occupancy—delivering the comprehensive workspace insights our clients need. With this solution, they gain a complete view of every workspace, no matter how small.”
Essential for community, collaboration and decision-making, meeting rooms and other small spaces are among the most valuable areas in the work environment. However, in many cases, the number, size and configuration of these spaces do not align with workplace needs. Post-pandemic, the reality is that most employees spend less time in the office, and so when they are there, right-sizing the mix of space to support collaboration and team work is more important than ever. According to industry reports:
- The modern work place is still in flux. By early 2025, less than two-thirds of people were back in the office full-time.
- Companies are reconfiguring office space to accommodate changing work patterns. Between 2021 and 2023, the amount of square footage dedicated to collaboration increased from 14% to 20%.
- In-person meetings are still important. Even with hybrid work options, 76% of professionals prefer meeting face-to-face.
- Conference rooms are highly-valued, but often underutilized. No matter the room size, more than half of meetings involve only two people.
The Micro sensor is designed specifically for smaller, shared work spaces. With privacy-safe mmWave technology, the Micro sensor detects occupancy levels and sends data to the Occuspace cloud for AI-driven analysis. Clients can access their data via Occuspace’s Customer Portal UI or an API or streaming data integration. An option is also available to integrate OS Micro’s real-time data with conference room booking systems, employee apps/Web pages, digital signage, and other use cases.
Compact and elegant in design, the Occuspace Micro sensor is inconspicuous and requires only a standard power outlet or USB connection to operate. As with all Occuspace technology, the Micro sensor is highly scalable, completely privacy-safe, and quick and easy-to-use, with no costly or time-consuming installation needed.
“We’ve been looking for an accurate and cost effective solution to measure our conference rooms for years,” noted a corporate Occuspace client. “Using this data, we’ve been able to reconfigure a number of buildings to better serve our employees and increase productivity.”
