Glen Cove Hospital, Huntington Hospital, Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, Mather Hospital in Port Jefferson, North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) in Manhasset, Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco and Sharon Hospital in Connecticut each achieved five stars from CMS, the highest rating possible using data that evaluates outcomes, patient experience and process. CMS, part of the Department of Health and Human Services, created the five-star rating to help consumers identify health care facilities by quality metrics, which include patient outcomes such as mortality, safety of care, readmissions, patient experience and timely and effective care.

Northwell also earned four-star ratings at Danbury Hospital, Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Medical Center in New Hyde Park, Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck, Phelps Hospital in Sleepy Hollow and Plainview Hospital. Overall, six Northwell hospitals improved their CMS standing from a year ago: Danbury, Lenox Hill, LIJ, NSUH, Phelps and Staten Island University Hospital improved their overall star ratings year-over-year.

“Our patients are the priority and our team members deliver consistent, quality and compassionate care each day,” said John D’Angelo, MD, Northwell’s president and CEO. “The latest CMS Star Quality Ratings reveal that commitment, turning a complex series of clinical measures into an easy-to-understand star rating. I’m proud to say that Northwell Health now has seven five-star hospitals. We’re never satisfied, but this is a great achievement.”

Northwell is the largest nonprofit health system in the Northeast with a workforce of 106,000 at 28 hospitals, more than 1,050 ambulatory care and 73 urgent care locations while tapping into the world-class expertise of the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell and the Hofstra Northwell School of Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies.

Only 12 percent of 3,203 reporting hospitals nationwide earned five-star status, which used Care Compare data between 2021-2025. Northwell’s five-star hospitals, while unified by process, were each outstanding in their own way:

Glen Cove Hospital is a five-star hospital for the third straight year. It is nationally recognized for rehabilitation by U.S. News & World Report and home to both acute inpatient rehabilitation as well as outpatient programs. It earned a top CMS rating in 2026, in part, because it scored well in 30-day readmissions, one of the most scrutinized government measures, as well as mortality, safety of care and patient experience.

Huntington Hospital, generally considered one of New York State’s best community hospitals, is top-rated by CMS for the fifth time since 2021. It is a Level III trauma center, Magnet designated and nationally-recognized for diabetes, pulmonology and geriatric excellence. The hospital received high marks for safety of care and mortality.

Lenox Hill Hospital, a fixture on Manhattan’s Upper East Side for more than 160 years, is a Magnet center of excellence with a Top 20 cardiology program. Healthgrades named it one of the nation’s Top 50 hospitals three years in a row. Lenox scored high in the CMS report for its low readmission and mortality rates and excellent safety of care.

Mather Hospital, a Magnet institution with its fourth straight five-star rating, is nationally recognized for patient safety, readmissions, mortality and highly regarded for patient experience. It has been recognized by Healthgrades as one of the nation’s Top 250 hospitals three years in a row. Its strong patient experience and mortality scores helped Mather earned a top CMS rating in 2025.

North Shore University Hospital is a Magnet-recognized institution which treats more than 90,000 patients each year, is home to the Sandra Atlas Bass Heart Hospital, the Katz Women’s Hospital, Northwell Transplant Institute, neurosurgery and is one of the busiest emergency departments in the region. It features Top 15 programs in orthopedics, diabetes and pulmonology. CMS rated it high for patient safety, timely and effective care, mortality, patient experience and readmissions.

Northern Westchester earned the top CMS rating for the third consecutive year. The Magnet hospital is nationally recognized for pulmonology and known for strong cancer, maternity and orthopedic programs. Northern Westchester was highly rated by CMS for safety of care, patient experience, mortality, timely and effective care and readmissions.

Sharon Hospital, perennially rated among the best hospitals in Connecticut, has been a CMS five-star facility in seven of the last eight years with an excellent reputation for maternity care. It scored high CMS marks in patient safety, readmissions, patient experience, timely and effective care and mortality.

“There are no days off in health care, especially at our hospitals,” said Peter Silver, MD, senior vice president and chief quality officer at Northwell. “CMS ratings offer clarity to the care that Northwell provides and an opportunity to improve what we already do well. Our quality shines through with 12 hospitals rated four stars or better.”

Northwell is the most awarded health system in the New York tri-state area five years in a row, according to U.S. News’ 2025-26 Best Hospitals rankings. Seven hospitals ranked among the best in New York state and combined to earn top 50 national rankings in 26 adult specialties. Fifteen hospitals earned A grades from Leapfrog’s 2026 Hospital Safety Grade list earlier this month. The health system was recognized as one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies® by Ethisphere earlier this year.
