What Happened?

A number of stocks fell in the afternoon session after investors shifted their focus from what AI technology can do toward concerns over how companies will finance it.

Driven by these escalating AI funding fears and elevated interest rates, CNBC noted that a massive rotation out of the sector erased more than $1 trillion from the world's largest semiconductor and AI-related stocks this week.

Furthermore, CNBC explained that this funding anxiety triggered counterintuitive moves in the broader market, as investors reassessed the impact of high interest rates on corporate debt-servicing capacity and overall economic growth. Because of these rising structural risks, CNBC reported that safe-haven demand temporarily outweighed inflation fears, prompting capital to exit high-growth tech assets and flow into the Treasury market, which ironically pulled the 10-year Treasury yield down toward 5.09 percent.

Ultimately, according to CNBC analysts, this widespread tech sell-off underscores a growing realization on Wall Street that if the capital-intensive AI trade slows due to financing constraints, broader economic growth will likely decelerate as well.

The stock market overreacts to news, and big price drops can present good opportunities to buy high-quality stocks.

Among others, the following stocks were impacted:

Zooming In On Twilio (TWLO)

Twilio’s shares are very volatile and have had 23 moves greater than 5% over the last year. But moves this big are rare even for Twilio and indicate this news significantly impacted the market’s perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 7 days ago when the stock gained 5.5% on the news that JPMorgan Chase raised its price target on the stock and continuing institutional demand from its addition to the S&P 500 provided momentum, while technology equities broadly rebounded from a sharp sell-off sparked by concerns over artificial intelligence revenue expansion. As detailed by TipRanks, the company's addition to the S&P 500 index generated sustained institutional demand, as index-tracking funds are forced to purchase shares to match the benchmark. This index inclusion often creates extended buying volume from institutional investors.

Additionally, the higher price target from JPMorgan Chase reflected increased expectations for Twilio's valuation, while optimism regarding its artificial intelligence communications strategy supported the upward move. Providing macroeconomic context, CNBC reported that major equity averages, including the S&P 500 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq, moved higher at the open on Friday as market sentiment stabilized across the SaaS sector.

Twilio is up 73.6% since the beginning of the year, but at $240.23 per share, it is still trading 20.3% below its 52-week high of $301.27 from September 2026. Despite the year-to-date gain, investors who bought $1,000 worth of Twilio’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at only $664.95.

ONE MORE THING: The $21 AI Application Stock Wall Street Forgot. While Wall Street obsesses over who’s building AI, one company is already using it to print money. And nobody’s paying attention.

AI chip stocks trade at ridiculous valuations. This company processes a trillion consumer signals monthly using AI and trades at a third of the price. The gap won’t last. The institutions will figure it out. You need to see this first. Read the FREE Report Before They Notice.
