Initially Randy Settenbrino’ s Blue Moon was hailed as a meritorious art, preservation, and design project. In a breathtaking departure from branded and formulaic industrial chic NYC each and every detail had been finished with purpose and passion. The careful salvaging and indigenous repurpose of a historic building culminated an abundance of awards and media triumph.

Randy and his wife Shain ran the hotel for many years, until family responsibilities trumped running the hotel and so they leased the project to what turned out to be a renegade tenant, who converted the stately hotel into a hostel; he used it as a cash cow and leaned on the reputation to open a string of hostels which flourished until Covid, at which point the tenant fled leaving the building in shambles.
The Settenbrino family was devastated by the sight of the building, the drain of a menacing lender syphoning the last of their assets, and the harsh reality there would be no PPP available since the last employees were not theirs.
Settenbrino said “In many ways the 18 months in restoring the building was harder than the initial 5-year project. The realization hit home that there was ‘no surrender, only defeat’, yet how could we proceed without funds or assistance?”
After 7 months the first part of an EIDL arrived; the funds were set aside for formidable infrastructure needs. It was time to confront the abuse to fine finishing and craftmanship, and so Settenbrino apprenticed his children and encouraged them to fight for their economic survival by applying the artisanship that was in their DNA. He called upon friends and the community who appreciated his past contributions and social efforts, and volunteers came forward.
By the grace of G-d’s multiple miracles, the Settenbrino family was allowed to return their family legend to its former glory and the neighborhood icon is now once again referred to as a hidden gem and a labor of love.
In September, its newly announced revival and the second resurgence rivals the first in beauty and aesthetics. Guestroom accommodations are beautifully and well-appointed King, Queen, Double Queen, and Extra-Large King guestrooms ranging in sizes from 311 – 800 square feet, high ceilings, 2/3rds of the rooms feature balconies, and higher floors have commanding views of the city.
The hotel now features many more tech and practical amenities: seamless check in, complementary Wi-Fi, gorgeous kitchenettes, induction stove tops, houseware, large screen TVs with Netflix and Hulu; Keurig coffee makers; kitchenettes; mini refrigerators and wall art from famed photographer Rebecca Lepkoff.
