Renowned Trial Lawyer Calls for Reform and Greater Support for Victims
HOUSTON, TX / ACCESS Newswire / February 13, 2025 / Prominent trial lawyer Tony Buzbee is calling for stronger legal protections for survivors of sexual assault, emphasizing the need for improved access to justice, support services, and stricter accountability for offenders. Buzbee, known for representing 21 women in lawsuits against NFL quarterback Deshaun Watson, is using his platform to push for reforms that ensure survivors receive the protection and legal representation they deserve.
"Too many victims are afraid to come forward because they fear retaliation or disbelief," said Buzbee. "We need a system that prioritizes their safety, their voices, and their ability to seek justice without fear."
The Urgent Need for Change
According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC), one in five women and one in 71 men in the U.S. have been sexually assaulted in their lifetime. However, only 25% of reported rapes lead to an arrest, and even fewer result in convictions. Many survivors face legal barriers, victim-blaming, and a lack of resources, leaving them without the support they need to rebuild their lives.
"Our legal system is failing too many survivors," said Buzbee. "The burden should not be on them to prove they deserve justice. We need to hold perpetrators accountable and create a system where survivors feel protected, not punished for coming forward."
A Call for Action
Buzbee is advocating for three major reforms:
Expanding Legal Protections - Ensuring stronger privacy laws for survivors and preventing legal loopholes that allow perpetrators to evade responsibility.
Increased Funding for Support Services - Directing more state and federal funding toward rape crisis centers, legal aid for survivors, and trauma-informed law enforcement training.
Harsher Penalties for Serial Offenders - Strengthening sentencing guidelines to ensure repeat offenders face appropriate legal consequences.
"We cannot allow predators to hide behind wealth or status," said Buzbee. "Survivors deserve a legal system that fights for them as hard as I do for my clients in court."
Taking the Fight Beyond the Courtroom
Buzbee is not just pushing for policy changes-he is donating $500,000 to organizations that provide legal aid and advocacy for sexual assault survivors, including the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault and the National Alliance to End Sexual Violence.
"This is not just a legal issue. It's a moral issue," Buzbee stated. "Every survivor deserves to be heard, believed, and supported."
