Sigma’s reputation for optical excellence doesn’t disappoint, and you can expect to produce well-controlled, sharp, and color-rich imagery in a variety of conditions. The lens has been redesigned to achieve greater sharpness throughout the zoom range and improved clarity and consistency throughout the aperture range, with excellent rendering all the way to f/2.8. Aspherical elements, FLD, and SLD are all present in the optical layout, as well as Nano Porous and Super Multi-Layer Coatings.
Thanks to the upgraded optics, this lens is now able to focus as close as 6.7” at the wide end, compared to 7.1” with the previous version. This slight-but-significant improvement equates to a 1:2.7 maximum magnification ratio, making this a suitable lens for close-up shooting. Also, Sigma has reduced focus breathing to help keep the angle of view consistent while recording video.
The new version of the 24-70mm f/2.8 has a more compact, nimble build along with improved on-lens controls. Compared to the first gen lens, this one is approximately 7% smaller and 10% lighter—it measures 4.7” long and weighs 1.6 lb while the original is 4.8” long and 1.8 lb. In addition to the sleeker profile, the version II gains a manual aperture ring for easier switching between f/stops and the ring can be de-clicked to benefit video applications. Also, it now sports two AFL buttons—the second button is on top of the lens and suits shooting in vertical orientation.
Autofocus performance has been improved too with the addition of an HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) motor that is up to three times faster than its predecessor for quicker, more responsive focusing to better capture moving subjects.
The 24-70mm f/2.8 II retains its dust- and splash-resistant construction, a water- and oil-repellant coating, and a zoom lock switch to keep the lens set at the widest focal length and smallest length during travel. It also includes a petal-style lens hood and features the same 11-blade diaphragm design as its predecessor, which is great for bokeh quality. Also, as expected, the lens will be available in both Sony E and L-mount versions.
