Coffee Facts, Myths & Trivia: Specialty Drink Terminology Guide Released

As coffee shops add even more special options to their menus this holiday season, custom bean roaster Coffee Lover breaks down the terminology to consumers in a new report. The explainer guide helps ensure customers understand what they're ordering.

As cafés add specialty drinks to their seasonal holiday offerings, a new guide from custom bean roaster Coffee Lover decodes the menu by explaining the differences between several popular, often-confused coffee drinks.

The guide comes as many popular coffee chains release their specialty holiday drinks. Both Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts began serving their signature pumpkin spice lattés in August, and Starbucks will add its traditional Christmas drinks to the menu the first week of November.

The custom bean roaster’s guide demystifies the menu for customers unfamiliar with the standard Italian terminology. Recent data from the National Coffee Association reveals that more than half of coffee drinkers aged 18-39 consumed specialty coffee drinks in the past week, and were much more likely to purchase them than Americans aged 40 and older.

Many of these seasonal specialties are espresso-based drinks. Espresso is not actually a different type of bean, Coffee Lover’s guide reveals, but a way of preparing the drink. Espresso is a highly concentrated coffee drink created when small amounts of hot water are forced through finely ground beans. It’s made from dark-roasted beans, and often drunk in small amounts since it’s so concentrated. Many add dairy, sweetener, or other flavorings to make it less bitter.

Cappuccino, by comparison, is a drink made of one-third espresso, one-third steamed milk, and one-third frothed milk. Viennese coffee house owners named it back in the 1700s, noting the frothy topping resembled the hood of Capuchin friar robes, according to the guide. Its milk content makes it milder than straight espresso, but sugar and flavorings can still be added.

Lattés are similar to cappuccinos, but with different proportions, according to the guide. Lattés generally are one-third espresso and two-thirds milk, with only a small layer of foam. Pumpkin spice flavoring is a popular addition, but many shops also offer caramel, vanilla, and even juniper flavoring seasonally.

A good choice for entry-level coffee drinks, café mocha is a coffee drink that blends espresso, milk and hot chocolate. The chocolate flavoring can come from chocolate powder, syrup, or melted chocolate. Mocha was not always associated with chocolate though, according to the guide. The name actually comes from a port in the country of Yemen where African coffee beans were exported.

These popular drinks are all available in coffee shops, but can also be made at home. Making high-end drinks at home gives consumers the opportunity to customize according to their taste, with a much lower price tag than the café.

Custom roaster Coffee Lover offers beans in many varieties suitable for at-home espresso-based drinks. The company is passionate about coffee, and is on a mission to create roasts that please every palate.
