ContrastConnect has announced a virtual contrast supervision platform for medical facilities and independent imaging centers looking to adopt the virtual supervision model.

-- The platform is now offering white-glove implementation of compliant virtual supervision infrastructure, which is designed to help short-staffed medical facilities cover scheduling gaps and improve patient access to essential diagnostic imaging services. ContrastConnect will provide both the technology and a comprehensive training program that will equip on-site technicians with the knowledge to manage adverse reactions to contrast media.

Health regulations stipulate that diagnostic imaging tests must be performed under the appropriate level of supervision. For level 2 diagnostic tests, which include all contrast-enhanced procedures, the Centers for Medicaid & Medicare (CMS) requires direct supervision. Traditionally, the CMS’ definition of “direct supervision” meant that the supervising physician had to be physically present during the procedure; however, during the pandemic, this rule was adapted to meet mounting public health and safety concerns, allowing supervising practitioners to be “immediately available” via two-way, real-time audiovisual technology in lieu of being on-site.
While the amended rule was implemented as a temporary measure, industry experts have noted its many benefits for medical practices amid the ongoing radiologist shortage. The virtual supervision model does not require on-site presence, allowing a single radiologist to oversee specialized imaging procedures in multiple facilities remotely. This allows for staffing options that would otherwise be stymied by geographic limitations and personnel availability, enabling imaging centers to improve coverage and extend operating hours into the evenings and non-work days - arrangements that ultimately enhance both patient care and revenue for the facility.
Because the model has been shown to be advantageous, especially for rural communities, CMS now permanently allows virtual supervision in medical facilities and independent imaging centers. Administrators who wish to adopt the model can partner with ContractConnect, which offers a secure, HIPAA-compliant platform that allows facilities to connect with radiologists trained in remote oversight.
The company will also provide its partners with the necessary telecommunications equipment, as well as comprehensive onboarding programs for on-site technicians. As properly educated medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals are now permitted to administer medication other than contrast media under the supervision of a physician, these individuals will also be given training by ContrastConnect to ensure medical readiness in the event of an adverse reaction.
