A literary novel reveals the humor, uncertainty, and resilience of three men trying to rebuild their lives in a changing world.
May 11, 2026 — When the Soviet Union collapsed, millions of people suddenly found themselves living in a completely different world. In Red Papers, author Serge Hazanov explores that moment of uncertainty through the voices of three Russian men trying to rebuild their lives after the fall of the system that once defined them.
The novel unfolds through a series of personal letters exchanged between Igor, Misha, and their charismatic mentor Yuri. Their conversations capture the confusion and strange realities of moving from the rigid Soviet environment into the unfamiliar freedoms of Western Europe.
As the characters travel between Russia and Switzerland, their letters reveal both the comic and difficult moments of adapting to a new society. Igor describes his homeland as “Absurdistan,” while Yuri shares unconventional advice on how to survive in a country where the men technically do not belong.
“When the old system disappeared, people suddenly had freedom but no clear direction,” Hazanov says. “These characters are trying to understand who they are in a world that has completely changed.”
Blending humor, reflection, and philosophical insight, Red Papers offers a vivid portrait of friendship, exile, and the search for identity during one of the most dramatic political transitions of the twentieth century.
