Artist Sean O'Brien to showcase innovative mirror and smartphone art exploring national identity and profound themes in March 2027.
-- Sean O'Brien: Crafting Cosmic Cartoons from Clare Chaos
Artist Sean O'Brien will present his solo exhibition, "Order Out of Chaos," in March 2027 at the Kilkee Sweeny Public Library in Kilkee, County Clare, Ireland. The exhibition will feature a collection of his most innovative and thought-provoking artwork, including pieces that invite viewers to contemplate the nature of religious and profane art through unique visual interpretations.
O'Brien's artistic philosophy, as he states, is "a search for beauty by creating order out of chaos!" This principle underpins his distinctive creative process, which transforms everyday reflections and accidental patterns into compelling visual narratives.

Unconventional Artistic Journey and Techniques
Sean O'Brien's path to becoming an artist is marked by significant personal transformation. After dedicating forty years to dairy farming near Kilrush, County Clare, a diagnosis of high-functioning autism in 2003 prompted a shift in his life. He retired from farming and spent nine years in Dublin pursuing courses in acting and computer studies to enhance his independence.
His return to the County Clare countryside in 2015 provided the "total freedom to be a creative artist and to design new images and cartoon figures," as he describes. It was during this period that he discovered the potential of mirrors and symmetry for generating novel designs, often resulting in what he calls "alien cartoon figures."
O'Brien's artistic method is highly unconventional, relying on a combination of everyday tools. His primary equipment includes two smartphone cameras, a small personal hand mirror, a larger two-by-three-foot mirror, office coloring paints, and a clear plastic box. He photographs the random patterns of light on surfaces like crumpled paper, and his subconscious, aided by his high-functioning autism, interprets these formations into distinct characters. "I can also see," he explains, "because of my high functioning autism I see faces of both people and animals on sections of wrinkled cloth and clothing too!"
This process yields a diverse array of figures, including kings, queens, alien lifeforms, clowns, showmen, and politicians, all characterized by their inherently cartoon-like appearance. "You could say therefore that cartoon people are my style," O'Brien asserts.
Reimagining National Identity and Exploring Profound Themes
A significant theme in O'Brien's work involves reimagining national identities through cartoon action figures. In 2017, he conceived "Bearded Ireland," a figure derived from the map of Ireland, envisioned as an "all-round cartoon action hero" capable of global adventures and cultural engagement. This concept was later extended to create a female cartoon action figure for Great Britain, complete with symbolic accessories.
O'Brien hopes these figures can achieve iconic status while promoting humor and understanding. He believes "natural laughter is the best medicine" for a world facing conflict. He also suggests that a maternal "Laura Croft" figure for Britain could offer a positive example for women in a male-dominated world.
His work frequently delves into themes of life and religion. The "Bearded Ireland" and Great Britain figures are intended to encourage a fresh perspective on national identity and foster harmonious global relationships. O'Brien notes that his subconscious sometimes produces images, such as crucifixion scenes, that prompt contemplation of religious and secular art. "if these images succeed in making people 'THINKING deeply as to what they might or might not really represent then I'll be very pleased with that result!'" he states.
A Vision for the Future and Universal Kinship

"Order Out of Chaos," O'Brien's upcoming exhibition, will showcase his most striking pieces, including two crucifixion-like images, one golden and the other blue. He aims to encourage viewers to "mentally explore what is or is not a real religious scene."
Looking ahead, O'Brien is committed to "continue to keep producing new and innovative artwork everyday!" He also aspires to share his unique mirror-based techniques with aspiring artists, aiming to democratize creativity. Inspired by his belief that "we are all poetically and spiritually brothers and sisters in one big family in this world with God as our loving father," O'Brien hopes his art conveys a message of universal kinship, encouraging kindness and understanding.
Sean O'Brien's artistic journey exemplifies the power of ingenuity and the boundless potential for creativity. His message to the public is an encouragement to create: "Go out and create! You'll feel much better if you do! Don't stay forever looking at other people's artwork. There's always room for new art!"
