The Hockey Wealth Group today announced the appointment of former NHL defenseman Tyson Strachan as Head of Educational Outreach, marking a significant step in the firm’s mission to support professional hockey players in preparing for life after the game.
Strachan, who played 11 seasons of professional hockey including stints with the St. Louis Blues and Washington Capitals, brings firsthand experience to the challenges players face upon retirement—ranging from identity loss and mental health struggles to financial instability. His new role focuses on creating educational initiatives that help athletes build financial literacy and transition readiness from early in their careers.
“The end of a hockey career is not just the end of a job—it’s the end of a way of life,” said Strachan. “For many, navigating what comes next is a deeply emotional journey. I’ve lived it, and now I want to help others be better prepared than I was.”
Strachan’s appointment comes at a time when leagues and organizations are increasingly recognizing the complexity of post-sport transitions. Resources like the NHLPA’s Player Assistance Program and the NHL Alumni Association provide mental health and career development services, but many former players still fall through the cracks. The Hockey Wealth Group aims to fill that gap with tailored financial education and transition planning from a team that includes former athletes who understand the journey.
Strachan’s own transition story adds powerful context. On February 9, 2016, he unknowingly played his last NHL game. Like many players, he had no formal plan for what would follow. “It felt like stepping off a cliff,” he recalls. Today, he credits a former teammate’s connection for helping him discover a new sense of purpose in mentoring others.
Through workshops, one-on-one support, and player-led storytelling, Strachan and The Hockey Wealth Group are committed to breaking the silence around retirement struggles and empowering players with tools for their second act.
“If you find yourself struggling or caught in a negative thought loop, I am an open book,” Strachan said. “I’d be honored to walk that part of the journey with you.”
