Estate winery brings 130+ years of wine industry experience and regenerative farming to produce site-driven Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays
The Underwoods of Young’s Holdings, one of the wine industry’s longest-standing family legacies, announce the launch of their first estate wine venture: Harper’s Rest in the Russian River Valley.
Established as Young’s Market Company in 1888, the family business expanded over generations across retail, importing, and distribution, helping shape the American wine and spirits landscape. With Harper’s Rest, fifth-generation family member Chris Underwood brings that legacy to the vineyard for the first time.
“Our family has been deeply involved in fine wine for generations,” says Underwood, CEO of Young’s Holdings. “Harper’s Rest is about applying that experience directly to the vineyard and cellar, to produce estate grown wines of exceptional quality.”
Harper’s Rest is situated on a 36-acre estate on Westside Road in Healdsburg, in the heart of the Middle Reach neighborhood of the Russian River Valley AVA. The property encompasses vineyards planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, a fully operational winery, and a tasting room surrounded by gardens and natural landscape reflective of the region. The winery takes its name from hops farmer Reuben Harper, an early agricultural settler who cultivated the land in the 1850s and is buried beneath a bay laurel tree now surrounded by vines.
In addition to the Westside Road property, Harper’s Rest includes Moon Dust Vineyard in the Sebastopol Hills—18 acres of mature vines planted to Goldridge soils (colloquially known as “Moon Dust”) that Underwood acquired in 2021. Together, the two sites form the foundation for a terroir-driven portfolio of Russian River Valley Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
Winemaker and General Manager Vance Rose oversees both vineyards and cellar operations. Both estates are farmed under regenerative organic principles, with Moon Dust Vineyard holding Regenerative Organic Certified® (ROC) status and Harper’s Rest Vineyard on track for certification. In the cellar, Rose employs native fermentations and minimal intervention to highlight site expression.
Harper’s Rest welcomes visitors to its Westside Road tasting room for a tasting experience featuring estate-grown Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Moon Dust Vineyard alongside Russian River Valley releases. Appointments are recommended; walk-ins are welcome ($30 per person). The estate is fully permitted for events, a rare occurrence in Sonoma County, with four distinct venues capable of accommodating up to 200 guests.
Wines are also available through the winery’s online store as well as the mailing list, offering members early access to limited releases.
