Church of Scientology Randburg Wages War Against Rampant Drugs in the Community

On Saturday, the Foundation for a Drug-Free World held a collaborative workshop on drugs with the community of Randburg to come up with solutions to tackle the widespread drug abuse that is ravaging the youth of South Africa. In the efforts to curb this, they are stepping up their efforts and working with the community successfully to bring awareness and cooperation. This collaboration between community stakeholders is geared to become a regular occurrence in the community of Randburg, as they are deeply worried by rising numbers of domestic cases, rampant drug abuse, and crime.

The training workshop began with a preview of the “Truth about Drugs documentary”, fully immersing the attention of the audience in the devastating impact of drugs. “The successful action in conveying the truth about drugs is through the words of those who have “been there and know firsthand the trauma that comes with it.” By telling their stories, they can pass on what they have learned so others avoid going down the same path,” said Asthra, the coordinator for Foundation for a Drug-Free World as she described the award-winning documentary.

The attendees then proceeded to enroll in the “Truth about Drugs online course” to equip themselves with practical knowledge about every drug that is available on the market and its side effects.

“It is wise for people to know as much as possible about drugs and our information kits provide as much knowledge as possible because we believe that an informed person reacts differently. This is why we do these workshops for the community so that the community can be informed,” added Asthra.

Thembalethu, one of the speakers at the community event, inspired the attendees with his story of surviving drugs. As a former addict himself, he also shared about the suffering and pain caused while he was using these substances.

After going through the first main steps of the training, the attendees began to read sections of the Truth About Drugs booklet aloud, giving their examples of drug addiction.

“I got the information I always wanted to know about. I learned how drugs can ruin your life dangerously. I know now that I don’t have to smoke any drugs. My favorite part was when they brought someone who had once been part of people who smoked drugs and he shared his experience. I would like to go out there to teach people about drugs,” said another attendee.

At the end of the seminar, all the attendees were fired up to be agents of change in their communities and play their part in ending drug abuse.

Asthra of the Foundation described their program as an international drug awareness campaign that has educated millions of people globally on the dangers of Drugs. “It is a privilege to be working together with the police and community to tackle this issue head-on. A lack of knowledge of something makes you vulnerable to it. If kids hear the truth about drugs instead of the lies spread by dealers, then I know they will make the right choices. That is what we want”.

The Foundation for a Drug-Free World is a nonprofit public benefit corporation, sponsored by the Church of Scientology, founded by L. Ron Hubbard that empowers youth and adults with factual information about drugs so they can make informed decisions and live drug-free.

About the company: "Since 1981, we have served a growing congregation in Johannesburg North. Johannesburg holds an exceptional place in Scientology history. For it was in Johannesburg that the Founder of our religion, L. Ron Hubbard, made his home in the early 1960s and worked to bring the spiritual freedom of Scientology to our nation. Above all, it was here he sought to revitalise the indomitable African spirit—a spirit which, once sparked, could burn forth throughout the world and thus realise his prediction and his dream: “From Southern Africa will spring the next great civilisation on this planet.”
