What Happened?

Shares of restaurant company Darden (NYSE: DRI) fell 2.2% in the pre-market session after the company reported third-quarter CY2026 financial results that missed Wall Street's earnings expectations despite in-line revenue growth.

According to the company’s press release, sales reached $3.2 billion, up 5.1% year on year, matching Wall Street expectations, while blended same-restaurant sales rose 3.1%. GAAP earnings of $2.04 per share fell 1.3% short of analyst consensus estimates of $2.07. Profitability weakened as operating margin contracted to 10% from 11.1% in the prior-year quarter, and free cash flow margin dropped to 3.2% from 5.5%, according to the release.

Underlying segment performance diverged across the portfolio, according to the press release. LongHorn Steakhouse drove top-line momentum with same-restaurant sales jumping 6.2%, lifting segment profit to $154.6 million, while Olive Garden posted slower same-restaurant sales growth of 1.1% with segment profit of $270.8 million.

CEO Rick Cardenas said each segment achieved positive same-restaurant sales, but higher restaurant labor costs of $1,028.9 million and food and beverage expenses of $984.9 million weighed on restaurant-level profits. The company reaffirmed its full-year outlook for diluted net earnings per share between $11.10 and $11.35, the release said.

When top-line growth is carried by steakhouse traffic while the larger Italian banner slows, overall margin resilience weakens against rising restaurant labor and ingredient expenses. Reaffirming the annual guidance range shows underlying traffic stability across the system, but meeting the full-year target will depend on Olive Garden reaccelerating sales without discounting away its margin.

After the initial drop, the shares shed some of the losses and rose to $211.42, down 1.1% from the previous close.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Darden’s shares are not very volatile and have had no moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful, although it might not be something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 9 months ago when the stock gained 3.8% on the news that analysts at Bernstein highlighted a potential recovery for the sector in 2026.

After a challenging 2025 marked by weakened consumer confidence, the firm anticipates a gradual traffic recovery. Several factors could stimulate consumer demand, including an upcoming Tax Bill and the U.S.-hosted Soccer World Cup, with effects potentially starting in the spring. This optimistic outlook was supported by restaurant valuations hitting 10-year lows, suggesting significant upside if consumer spending data improves. Following a period where households cut back on dining out due to inflation, larger tax rebate checks are also seen as a potential catalyst for a rebound in casual dining.

Darden is up 12.9% since the beginning of the year, and at $211.42 per share, it is trading close to its 52-week high of $227.68 from August 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Darden’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $1,332.
