About Ms. Sullivan

Ms. Sullivan is the daughter of an immigrant from Lebanon who arrived in the United States with nothing to his name. The oldest of 17 children, her father attended college, became a citizen and started a business. His tenacity and drive were an inspiration to his children and Ms. Sullivan and her brothers all share a competitive drive.

Ms. Sullivan also grew up with a passion for teaching. She often played with her dolls, pretending she was their teacher and using a chalkboard to teach them. English was her favorite subject in school and later, while she was a student teacher, she committed to making teaching English her career.

Ms. Sullivan earned a degree in English and a master's in educational technology from Michigan State University. She started her teaching career as an English teacher at North Farmington High School in 2006, where she remained until taking a similar position at the University Liggett School in 2008.

"When I was younger, I always thought I wanted to be either a teacher or a businesswoman. With the family business beginning, I was able to do both," Ms. Sullivan says.

A Family Business

Ms. Sullivan's father started a food service and restaurant business. Although he envisioned it as a family business, he did not initially make any of his children official owners. To ensure that his children knew all aspects of the business, he had them start at the bottom and work their way up.

"We did everything from delivering, driving, scrubbing the toilets and making sandwiches," Ms. Sullivan says.

Even though she was the owner's daughter, she was simply a regular employee when she came to work at her family's business. Meanwhile, she was also teaching.

Ms. Sullivan tried to balance her two careers for several years. She successfully helped the family business with payroll and worked on the weekends. Eventually, she realized she had to choose between the two.

"I moved over to the family business full-time after four years with the University Liggett School. I had to choose one or the other because it was too much for me to manage both," Ms. Sullivan says.

Notable Career Achievements

Ms. Sullivan has been in her profession for 22 years, advancing to her current position within her family business. As the chief compliance officer of Tomey Group LLC, Ms. Sullivan has a wide range of responsibilities. These include compliance with state and government regulations, payroll management, handling human resource complaints, hiring new staff, conducting performance reviews and overseeing all insurance matters for the company. Ms. Sullivan also ensures that all 618 employees at 47 Jimmy John locations across Michigan are treated equitably.

For her accomplishments in the field of business, she has been named the Empowered Women of the Year, International Association of Top Professionals in 2025; Top 50 Fearless Leaders, International Association of Top Professionals in 2025; Top Owner and Chief Compliance Officer of the Year and International Association of Top Professionals in 2024.
