WASHINGTON, District of Columbia – John Pontius, founder and managing attorney of Pontius Tax Law, PLLC, has been elected to serve a three-year term on the D.C. Bar Taxation Community Steering Committee, effective July 1, 2026.
Pontius was elected to his first term alongside Jorge Oben-Cuadros and Raghav Agnihotri, who were reelected to second terms. The D.C. Bar announced the results as part of its 2026 leadership elections, with all three members serving through 2029.
The Taxation Community serves private, government and institutional tax professionals by providing education and collaboration on federal, international, state and local tax issues. Its steering committee leads a community with 10 substantive tax committees that organize programs and other resources for D.C. Bar members.
“The Taxation Community gives tax lawyers a forum to address federal, state and local tax issues with the practitioners and government attorneys working on them,” Pontius said. “My focus on the Steering Committee will be supporting practical programs that help lawyers stay current and serve their clients.”
Pontius founded Pontius Tax Law, PLLC, which represents individuals and businesses in tax matters before the Internal Revenue Service and state taxing authorities. The firm has offices in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia.
Pontius represents clients in matters involving IRS and state audits, appeals, penalty abatement, U.S. Tax Court litigation, offshore and domestic disclosures, FBAR examinations, FATCA, FIRPTA, tax liens and levies, trust fund recovery penalties and unfiled tax returns. He earned his LL.M. in taxation from Georgetown University Law Center and is licensed in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia, as well as before the U.S. Tax Court and U.S. district courts for the District of Columbia and Maryland.
The D.C. Bar is the largest unified bar in the United States, with more than 120,000 members in all 50 states and more than 80 countries.
