In celebration of 30 years of Democracy in South Africa, the Business Pledge Collaborators, Church of Scientology and Youth for Human Rights hosted the first day of celebrations for the youth by engaging tertiary students on human rights issues. The event held at the majestic Castle Kyalami and attended by over 300 youth, featured notable guest speakers, including Advocate Mikateko Maluleke, Director-General in the Presidency's Women, Youth, and People with Disabilities department; Sonwabile Ndamase, renowned for his Madiba shirts; TV personality Scoop Makhathini; and popular hip-hop DJ Speedsta. Representatives from Printing SA, NxtAbled, Hollywood and tourism were also amongst guest speakers.

Advocate Maluleke who delivered the keynote address, emphasized the significance of reflecting on 30 years of democracy, partnerships, and growth. She highlighted the importance of understanding human rights and responsibilities, citing the controversial practice of ‘ukuthwala’ as an example. Maluleke stressed that while individuals have rights, they must be exercised subject to equality and respect for others' rights.

The event featured a panel discussion with DJ Speedsta, Scoop Makhathini, and Sonwabile Ndamase, addressing issues in the creative industry, including the importance of protecting original work. Delegates shared their insights, appreciating the discussion on human rights and the information gained from the celebrity-led panel.

In an exclusive interview with TimesLIVE, Maluleke elaborated on the need for young people to understand their rights and responsibilities, including patriotism and self-love. She acknowledged that the government and education system may have failed to instill these values.

“We have never [as a society] looked at what human rights mean and what they mean for young people. Young people always say 'I have a right' but all those rights have got duties and responsibilities [attached]. So the minute you start talking about human rights ... that goes with duties and responsibilities. [So] today's event helps young people understand that we [also] have responsibilities,” said Maluleke.

“Nowadays, we have something we call a non-disclosure agreement. You can find a template online and you can change it according to how you feel. So ... if you have an idea you want to share with Scoop, don't just share it, make him sign an NDA because you can share it with Scoop and [because] he has lots of money, he can execute it and there's nothing you can do about it,” DJ Speedsta said.

Several delegates also shared their insights on day one of the event, with many saying they enjoyed the discussion around human rights as well as the information they got from the celebrity-led panel.

Human Rights has always been a concern for the Church of Scientology and thus we began a movement that has seen over 600 million individuals learning about their rights globally due to our intervention. We are celebrating 30 years of democracy as a country and we should be working even harder to ensure that the next 30 years are blissful. As L. Ron Hubbard once said ‘Human Rights must be made a fact, not an idealistic dream’ – we appreciate this collaborative effort to protect our rights as a society,” said Sandile Hlayisi, Spokesperson for the Church of Scientology.

The event was followed by a masterclass, an exhibition by young small business owners as well as other beneficial activities for the youth of South Africa on Freedom Day.
