Nashville Adventures Launches New Morning Tour Blending Local History and Coffee Culture

-- In a city known for its neon nights and late-stage legends, one local tour company is turning its focus to the early hours—and the quieter, often-overlooked stories that shaped Music City.

Nashville Adventures, a veteran-owned walking tour company recognized for its offbeat historical explorations, has announced a new experience titled “Historic Grounds: A Music City History and Coffee Morning Tour.” This tour is designed for travelers and locals who want to experience downtown Nashville before the streets fill with music and motion.

The tour begins not at a landmark, but at a coffeehouse—specifically chosen for its role in supporting the city’s local roasting scene. Participants are offered a complimentary cup of coffee or tea, followed by a slow-paced, detail-rich walk through Nashville’s historical corridors.

A Different Kind of Storytelling

Unlike traditional tours focused solely on monuments and tourist stops, Historic Grounds builds a narrative from personal accounts, lesser-known sites, and marginalized voices. The route includes areas like Printer’s Alley, once a hotbed of underground nightlife and bootlegging, as well as public squares that have witnessed both musical breakthroughs and civil protests.

“We’re trying to show a quieter Nashville,” says founder and guide Paul Whitten, a former Army sergeant turned historian. “There are layers here—layers that aren’t visible if you’re only following the sound of guitars. We go looking for those layers.”

Topics range from the city’s Civil War entrenchments and Reconstruction struggles to the evolution of local Black music venues and the rise of Nashville’s progressive press. The goal, says Whitten, is not to glorify the past but to better understand it—and to reflect on the kinds of people who have built, shaped, and resisted the city we see today.

Designed for Small Groups and Thoughtful Moments

The tour is intentionally limited to smaller groups, allowing participants to ask questions, engage in dialogue, and walk at a conversational pace. It’s ideal for early risers, solo travelers, educators, and history enthusiasts looking to see a side of Nashville that rarely makes it onto postcards.

While coffee provides the literal grounds for the journey, the metaphorical meaning isn’t lost on the organizers.

“We’re calling it ‘Historic Grounds’ not just because of the coffee, but because of the soil we’re walking on,” Whitten explains. “There’s so much that’s happened here—beneath the asphalt, behind the murals, and under the radar.”

More Than Just a Tour

Nashville Adventures, which has quietly built a following among educators, veterans, and local history buffs, operates with a mission rooted in service. Every tour guide is a U.S. military veteran. The company also contributes a portion of all proceeds to veteran support nonprofits and civic education projects.

The new morning tour adds to their existing lineup, which includes ghost tours, civil rights history walks, and custom experiences for corporate and school groups.

Historic Grounds: A Music City History and Coffee Morning Tour launches this week and will be available three mornings per week throughout the summer.
