What happened?

Shares of media, broadcasting, and digital services company E.W. Scripps (NASDAQ: SSP) jumped 15.7% in the morning session after the company raised its full-year 2026 political advertising revenue expectations and announced plans to pay down at least $150 million in debt.

According to a company press release, The E.W. Scripps Company announced that its full-year 2026 midterm Local Media political advertising revenue is now anticipated to reach approximately $275 million. That updated forecast represents an increase of about 40% compared to the revenue generated during the 2022 midterm election cycle. Scripps also revealed plans to direct cash and fourth-quarter political revenue toward reducing company debt by at least $150 million.

Midterm political advertising cycles offer a substantial influx of high-margin cash flow for local broadcasters. Scripps' decision to channel those proceeds into deleveraging its balance sheet directly eases interest obligations and bolsters financial durability, providing a clear catalyst for shareholder confidence.
