Function-4 has released a new guide for Texas businesses on compromised credentials on the dark web, explaining how employee logins leak, the steps to take once an exposure is found, and the controls intended to prevent future leaks.

-- Texas IT services company Function-4 has published a new guide to compromised credentials on the dark web, designed to help local businesses respond when employee logins are found for sale. The new guide moves from the ways credentials are exposed to the immediate response steps and longer-term controls intended to stop future leaks.

More details can be found at https://function-4.com/compromised-credentials/

Function-4 developed the guide for owners and office managers at small and mid-sized Texas businesses, many of which run on email, remote access, and cloud applications without a dedicated security team. Function-4 notes that smaller firms are often targeted by attackers using stolen logins because their defenses tend to be weaker.

Most leaks, the guide explains, begin through everyday channels rather than a dramatic breach of the business itself. An employee may reuse a work password on a site that is later breached, type it into a phishing page, or lose it to infostealer malware. Because a stolen password looks like a normal sign-in, misuse is difficult to spot.

At its core is an eight-step response for any exposed account. Readers are advised to set a new, unique password, end all active sessions to cut off stolen session cookies, and confirm multifactor authentication is active. Later steps cover sign-in history, mailbox forwarding rules, a scan of the affected device, and a written record for cyber insurers.

A further section looks beyond the immediate fix toward preventing the next leak. It recommends making multifactor authentication mandatory on email, remote access, and admin accounts, adopting a password manager, and blocking known breached passwords in line with NIST guidance. Phishing training and ongoing dark web monitoring round out the advice.

"Most businesses never learn their logins were exposed until someone has already used them," a Function4 spokesperson explains. "This guide is intended to give owners a clear order of operations the moment an exposure comes to light, and to show that a leaked password does not have to become a breach."
