STARCARES Commissions Handmade Gift Sets from Malaysian Autism Charity in Support of Young Artisans

-- STARCARES, the corporate social responsibility programme of global multi-asset broker STARTRADER, has commissioned a 30-piece gift set of handmade tote bags from Autism Cafe Project, a Malaysian organisation working with autistic young people. The bags were designed and produced by 8 to 10 autistic adolescents and young adults supported by Autism Cafe Project. The distinction that matters here is that the arrangement is a purchase rather than a donation, which makes it payment for skilled work.

Each bag is made by hand, and the sets will be distributed by STARTRADER as corporate gifts, carrying the makers' work to recipients who would not otherwise encounter it.

Autistic adults face substantial barriers to paid employment, and the barrier is rarely capability. It is more often the assumption, made before any work is seen, that the capability is not there. Commissioning finished goods at a commercial standard tests that assumption directly, because the buyer has to judge the product rather than the maker.

This falls under the community support work of STARCARES, which is built on a preference for recurring commitments over single gestures. A one-time cheque is easier to write than an order that has to be filled, and it teaches a workshop nothing about whether its output can hold up to outside demand.

"We could have written a cheque and it would have taken an afternoon. Buying the work is harder and it says something different. It says the output stands on its own, which is the part these young people are least often told."

- Peter Karsten, CEO, STARTRADER

"Our young people know the difference between charity and a customer. An order to fill changes how the room feels."

- Mohd Adli Yahya, Founder of Autism Cafe Project

STARCARES intends to continue working with Autism Cafe Project and to apply the same purchasing approach with community organisations in other markets STARTRADER serves.
