Full-scale research center opens to industry, universities and national laboratories, advancing acoustic sensing across upstream energy, pipelines, critical infrastructure and national security

Seismos, the test-and-measurement company that introduced closed-loop stimulation as a new operating category for oil and gas well completions, today opened the Seismos Applied Acoustics Research Center, an 87,120-square-foot facility built around nearly half a mile of full-scale pipe. The center establishes one of the most advanced multi-frequency wellbore and pipeline acoustics test beds of its kind.

Located in Jarrell, Texas, north of Austin, the center houses a 2,349-foot full-scale flow loop equipped with acoustic sensing, flow meters, fiber-optic instrumentation and other measurement technologies. The facility enables operators, technology partners and researchers to recreate wellbore and pipeline conditions at full scale, study physical responses and develop and test measurement technologies under controlled, field-representative conditions.

An Open Platform for Test and Measurement

The center provides a full-scale environment for advancing the measurement technologies behind closed-loop stimulation and a broader range of acoustic sensing applications. Closed-loop stimulation uses real-time physical measurements from the well to continuously evaluate how a treatment is performing and inform operational adjustments while the stage is still being pumped, rather than following a fixed plan. Seismos integrates these measurements with AI-powered completion logic, intervention and control workflows, and automation systems interfacing with modern control centers and pumping fleets.

The center enables Seismos to test and validate measurements of pipe and perforation friction, effective hydraulic diameter, flow distribution, perforation efficiency (how effectively the wellbore perforations are taking fluid) and related acoustic signatures against known physical conditions.

The full-scale test system can be configured with different wellbore perforation counts and diameters, fluid systems, flow-rate schedules, erosion states, pressures, proppant loadings and other operating conditions. Researchers can define test conditions and observe how acoustic and pressure-wave responses change as the physical system changes. The facility supports research across complex flow behavior, fluid dynamics, friction, acoustic and pressure-wave sensing, multiphase flow and physics-based AI.

Seismos designed the center as an open platform for collaboration with operators, technology partners, universities and national laboratories. Partners can work alongside Seismos researchers to define test conditions, investigate new measurement approaches and advance the science and application of acoustic interrogation across industrial systems. Physical Data Powering AI

As industrial operations become increasingly automated, physical measurements provide the foundation for the AI models and decision systems built on top of them. They capture what is actually occurring in the physical system, including outliers, anomalous responses and previously unseen behavior that may not be represented in historical datasets.

While AI cannot create those physical observations, it can be powerful in interpreting them at scale—identifying relationships across large datasets, combining measurements with the operating history behind them, and feeding the completion logic that turns physical information into operational decisions. Seismos has built a proprietary database spanning hundreds of thousands of stages of measurements and subsurface information, providing a growing foundation for the development of its AI models, completion logic and automation systems.

The new center expands that capability by creating a full-scale environment where new physical conditions can be studied, new measurements generated and increasingly complex system responses explored. As that information is incorporated into Seismos’ broader body of physical measurements and operating data, it can further advance AI models, automation systems and emerging physical AI applications across energy and industrial systems.

One Technology, Many Industries

The acoustic science behind Seismos’ closed-loop stimulation technology extends across industries. Acoustic sensing provides a way to interrogate complex physical systems and extract information about conditions and changes within them. Research at the center therefore reaches beyond oil and gas wells to pipeline inspection and integrity, critical infrastructure monitoring, and defense and national security applications. The center gives Seismos and its research partners a full-scale environment to explore how that approach can be applied to new sensing challenges and industrial environments.

“Our focus remains on solving some of the most difficult measurement and control challenges in upstream oil and gas and pipelines, including continuing to advance closed-loop operations,” said Panos Adamopoulos, Founder and CEO of Seismos. “At the same time, our technologies have applications far beyond those markets. This Applied Acoustics Research Center allows us to accelerate that work in critical infrastructure, energy security and other applications.”

About Seismos
