New capability enables virtual cards to be provisioned directly to Apple Wallet and Google Wallet for tap-to-pay purchases, with no additional app required.
ConnexPay, the unified payments platform that connects customer PayIns to supplier PayOuts, has expanded its virtual card capabilities to support mobile wallets, allowing eligible virtual cards to be securely provisioned directly to Apple Wallet and Google Wallet for tap-to-pay purchases, without requiring users to download a separate app.
Virtual cards and digital wallets are playing an increasingly significant role in how businesses and consumers make payments. Juniper Research forecasts that global virtual card transaction value will grow from $5.2 trillion in 2025 to $17.4 trillion by 2029, an increase of 235%. At the physical point of sale, digital wallets already account for 17% of U.S. transaction value, with adoption growing at nearly three times the rate of overall POS growth, according to Worldpay’s Global Payments Report 2026.
ConnexPay's new capability brings the speed, security and control of virtual cards to in-person payments. Businesses can issue a virtual card and make it available through the mobile wallet already on a recipient's device, allowing them to tap to pay at the point of sale without waiting for a physical card or downloading and managing another app.
“Virtual cards have traditionally given businesses tremendous control over how payments are made, but their use has largely been limited to online and remote transactions,” said Ben Peters, CEO of ConnexPay. “By enabling virtual cards for mobile wallets, we're extending that same control to in-person payments. A card that exists entirely in the digital world can now be used at the physical point of sale just like a physical card.”
The capability can support a broad range of time-sensitive, in-person payment scenarios, from helping travelers cover approved expenses during a disruption or pay at the hotel front desk to supporting corporate T&E and vendor payments at the point of sale. Across these use cases, businesses can extend virtual cards to in-person payments while maintaining control over how and where funds are spent.
ConnexPay has also expanded its issuing capabilities with Mastercard Physical Cards, giving businesses another option for payment scenarios where a physical card is preferred or required. Existing virtual card customers can add Physical Cards without replacing or rebuilding their current issuing programs, while maintaining the spend controls, configurable limits, merchant category restrictions, program management tools and rebate opportunities available through ConnexPay.
Together, these capabilities give businesses greater flexibility to issue the right payment credential for the way a payment needs to be made, whether through a traditional virtual card, tap-to-pay or a physical card.
